What Is Orthognathic Surgery?
Orthognathic surgery — also known simply as jaw surgery — is undertaken to correct severe jaw discrepancies. It involves a combination of orthodontic treatment and surgical correction, and can greatly improve oral function, facial and dental appearance, and the patient's overall quality of life.
Treatment is typically carried out in two phases: an orthodontic preparation phase to align the teeth within each jaw, followed by the surgical procedure to reposition the jaws, and then a final orthodontic phase to achieve the ideal bite and tooth alignment.
Who Is Orthognathic Surgery For?
This treatment is recommended for patients with significant jaw discrepancies that cannot be corrected by orthodontic treatment alone — for example, severe underbites, overbites, or facial asymmetry. It is only considered once facial growth is complete.
