Why Are Retainers Important?
Once your active orthodontic treatment is complete, retainers are essential for maintaining your results. Without a retainer, teeth have a natural tendency to shift back towards their original positions — a process known as relapse.
Retainers hold your teeth in their corrected positions while the surrounding bone and tissues stabilise around the new alignment. Most patients wear their retainers long-term to protect their results.
Types of Retainer
Fixed Retainers
A thin wire bonded to the inside surface of your front teeth. Fixed retainers work continuously and require no effort from the patient. They are discreet and very effective at preventing relapse of the front teeth.
Removable Retainers
Clear removable retainers (similar to Invisalign® aligners) are worn at night. They are easy to clean and allow you to see the alignment of your teeth. Your orthodontist will advise on how frequently they should be worn.
