What Are Functional Braces?

Functional braces — also known as twin block braces — are a special type of removable appliance used for teeth that stick out significantly and to correct bite discrepancies. They work by encouraging the jaw to grow into the correct biting position.

This type of brace is mainly used for patients who are still growing, as the natural growth process can be guided to achieve the desired jaw relationship. They are typically worn as a first phase of treatment, often followed by fixed braces to refine the tooth alignment.

How Do Functional Braces Work?

The twin block appliance consists of two separate acrylic blocks — one for the upper teeth and one for the lower teeth — which fit together and hold the lower jaw in a forward position. This encourages the lower jaw to grow forward, reducing the protrusion of the upper front teeth.
